Born on the 8th of June 1967 in Bien Hoa in the province of Dong Nai, Mai Anh Dung has graduated from the Fine Arts Academy of HCMC in 1993.
Despite his young age he is already participating to numerous exhibitions in Vietnam. He also exposes his work in Brisbane (Australia) in 1996. Mai Anh Dung inspires his work with references to the CHAM culture, its sculptures, bas-reliefs and religious writings. This religious obsession gives to his paintings a mystical and a traditional dimension. Both of these often lead the amateur to Hindu art form from which the CHAM culture is originated.
In the framework of the H&S contest, he has realized among others a painting called “the child”. This is an audacious illustration of the « duality » : moon and sun; day and night; and a sexualily originating life. Mai Anh Dung talks so well about his work that visiting his studio with Suzanne Lecht was a real delight.
His work style will also evolve in the early 2000s to nest in a very personal and modern representation of naive heads and faces.
