Nguyen Than

Nguyen Than is an artist from the North, born in 1948 in Ninh Binh. As soon as 1970 he wins a price for his painting “Portrait of lovers”.
As a sculptor, he wins numerous prices along the years. In 1991 he takes part in the exhibition “Uncorked Soul” in Hong Kong organised by the Plum Blossoms gallery, followed by exhibitions in Singapore and Miami.

Besides numerous exhibitions in his country, his work will also be exposed in London and Geneva in 1995 and in Ballens sur Morges in 1996 (Mekong 1996). 1996 will also be the year of a group exhibition in the Fujita Museum in Tokyo then in Bangkok and San Francisco. In 1997, he exposes his work in Singapore and in the Espace Kiron in Paris and in 1998 it is in the H&S Art Gallery in Brussels.
Nguyen Than is without any doubts one of the leaders of contemporary painting in Vietnam. He masters his art in a universe that he constantly explores even if he gives the impression to stay in the same world. Each painting is a nostalgic evocation of the past in which women occupy a crucial place. Nguyen Than and his family have moved to the South in 1954 along with a lot of other Catholics. When Saigon falls in 1975 Nguyen Than is asked not to paint and therefore he spends the following 12 years working as a cyclo, without any doubts one of the most famous. He started to paint again little by little and he is now enjoying a growing success. Very few artists of Vietnam express with such force the beauty and poetry of a sad wait between a gone past and a future that is supposed to be more promising. Nguyen Than is also anxious of so much time wasted, so many deprivations in an expression that has wandered along the years.

Than is a prolific artist, passionate and tireless but so discreet.
Since 1997, he has evolved considerably in his works becoming more and more abstract but so rich in symbols and so inspired. His work is highly sought after despite a rating that keeps climbing.
