Four works by Nguyen Tu Nghiem recently came up for auction in Hong Kong at Sotheby’s sale of Modern and Contemporary Southeast Asian Art. Two works sold for nearly three times their estimates.
A pastel from 1974, titled ‘Bird, Man and Horse’, estimated at 20,000 – 30,000 HKD, sold for 68,750HKD (7800 euros). ‘Érotomania’, another small pencil drawing from 1994, sold for 60,000HKD (6800 euros), six times its low estimate of 10,000HKD.
While the market for modern Vietnamese art continues to be up and down, depending on the artist, such signs of movement at Sotheby’s, for an online sale to top it off, are encouraging. Even under the present circumstances, it is notable that collectors are still buying and looking for works that resonate.
