Vu Thang

photo_vuthangYoung and very talented, Vu Thang is a rare phenomenon in Vietnam. He has not had much training and was not born in a region rich of cultural tradition (his birthplace is Hai Phong). He lived 10 years with an ethnic minority from the centre of the country that helped him to understand fully their lifestyle. Therefore, its painting is inspired from funerary statues of the central highlands and the west, as well as primitive art found in many caves and caverns. In his recent work, away from the highlands, Vu Thang gave his paintings a lighter and sunnier touch. He also lost his faces, almost to the point of no representation.
